{"id":2322,"date":"2017-03-01T11:09:32","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T19:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.chrisrivard.com\/?p=2322"},"modified":"2017-03-01T11:09:32","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T19:09:32","slug":"information-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisrivard.com\/blog\/information-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Information Pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard the phrase &#8220;information pollution&#8221; from Evgeny Morozov the other day and I think it perfectly captures what I&#8217;ve been thinking as I try to allocate more time to read and write and think during the day. It&#8217;s a grasping at the ability to have a cohesive thought, to formulate a thesis and make a case for an idea without being sidetracked and having my\u00a0attention hijacked.<\/p>\n<p>It fits with the concept of choice architecture and the behavioral underpinnings of an internet supported by advertising.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the long tail, the power law, the Pareto\u00a0distribution of garbage information to valuable information. Most of what is online, in the explosion of online &#8220;news&#8221;and social media is of &#8220;low value&#8221; and doesn&#8217;t contribute to a deeper understanding of any complex topic and primarily serves as a distraction to the exercise of thinking deeply about a specific topic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chrisrivard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_4153-e1488395357440.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2327\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.chrisrivard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_4153-e1488395357440-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s become more apparent to me as I try to save articles to read in the future (when I have time) \u00a0and also move deliberately through my\u00a0book reading list.
